Illinois voters nominate Giannoulias, Kirk for open U.S. Senate seat

February 3, 2010

Congressman Mark Kirk and State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias will square off in November for the open U.S. Senate seat after posting victories Tuesday in their respective primary elections.

Kirk scored the easier of the two wins, besting Patrick Hughes, Donald Lowry and three other candidates in the Republican primary.

Giannoulas defeated fellow Chicagoans David Hoffman and Cheryle Jackson on his way to the Democratic nomination.

Congressional Quarterly’s CQ politics rates the Illinois U.S. Senate race a toss up.    It will also be hard fought.   Both national parties launched almost immediate attacks on Kirk and Giannoulias.

Illinois Farm Bureau congratulates each of the winners and will invite them to appear in late July before the Illinois Agricultural Legislative Roundtable.   In years with Senate races, the Roundtable hosts a candidate forum giving more than 200 Illinois farm leaders the opportunity to hear from and question each of the candidates in separate appearances on a farm.

We will have more information on the Senate Roundtable event as the year progresses.

Primary election voters also nominated several members of the U.S. House.   A complete listing of all of the Illinois congressional primary races can be found on the Politico interactive website.
